Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confession of a Marriage Counselor

Meet Judith, a struggling, young, married, aspiring marriage counselor who works for a "millionaire dating company," and happens upon a client who is a very rich, eligible, and available bachelor.  To tell you any more, will ruin it for you.  I will say however, that this movie deals with so many issues; infidelity, how to treat people, and discerning between what is right and wrong.  Not to mention, "All that glitters isn't gold," and others.  All I can say is, 'WOW!'  Tyler Perry has truly given Nicholas Sparks (The Vow, The Notebook, A Walk To Remember) a run for the money.  Nothing about this movie is funny, so, if you're looking for something like 'Madea,' this is not for you.  But, if you enjoyed 'The Family That Preys' or 'Mr. Good Deeds,' then you will enjoy this one too.  The acting, actors (Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Lance Williams, Ella Joyce, Vanessa Williams, Brandy), scenes, etc., were very well done!

Coming Soon Previews

Each year, as the industry ramps up for the Summer "Blockbuster" movies, they show all these previews during the 1st superhero or expected blockbuster movie.  This year, I think "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" kicked it off, and I saw previews for the following movies:

1.  White House Down - stars Jamie Foxx & Channing Tatum.  I'm not totally sure what this is about, but, based on the title and the previews, if its anything like the movie that was just released, "Olympus Has Fallen," I'm already questioning Hollywood.  Really, this close together, deja vu again?  Oh well, I guess maybe they were thinking (as they often do, which is why we end up w/ entirely too many sequels), "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

2.  Hangover 3 - I didn't notice Phil in the previews, perhaps he got smart and bowed out this time around since he didn't have a really huge part in the previous 2.  I'm agreeing w/ him though (even if that's not the case)...SERIOUSLY??  I honestly wasn't that much of a fan of part 2, but, I can truly see that part 3, is a joke.  The previews mention a conclusion to the story, but, I don't recall a cliffhanger in part 2.  Enough said.

3.  R.E.D. 2 - Super, duper excited about this one.  This continues the 1st R.E.D. (Retired, Extremely Dangerous), w/ most of the original crew; John Malkovich, Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and Mary Louise-Parker.  Looks like Catherine Zeta-Jones has joined as well.  When I saw her on the screen, I thought about her getting added to the "Ocean's" films, and those just kept getting better.  I was a true fan of the 1st, can't wait for this one!!

4.  The Wolverine - We get to dive deeper in to the world of X-Men's Wolverine!  As a fan of the cartoon, and all the movies, I can't see this one being anything but good!

5.  Star Trek Into Darkness - Looks like even more action for the new generation of Enterprise passengers.  Lots of action, and special effects...can't wait!!

There are a few others coming as well, like After Earth w/ Will Smith & son, Jaden Smith, World War Z w/ Brad Pitt, Fast and Furious 6 (Letty's back!!), and Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise.  Oh yeah, and can't forget Iron Man 3!!  Yup, looks like a pretty good summer for movies (but, I'm seriously questioning Hangover 3 lol).

Part 2...SERIOUSLY???!! (G.I. Joe: Retaliation)

Ok, G.I. Joe fans, the "Joes" are back!  Now, I saw the 1st one, and honestly, I absolutely hated it.  It was not realistic (yeah, I know, but still), it was more of a comedy (when it really wasn't supposed to be), and just yuck, plain and simple.  Retaliation, on the other hand, just WOW!!  The toys and special effects were GREAT, the plot, GREAT, and I even enjoyed Channing Tatum for the 1st time in like, forever.  (I'm sorry Tatum fans, the man can not act).  Anyway, this movie in comparison to the first one is like comparing "The Hulk" to "The Incredible Hulk," not even sure why they made either of the 1st of either of these series, because the sequels were so much better!!!!  The addition of The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) and Bruce Willis make this even more enjoyable.  I heard some say that this was a disappointment in comparison to the comic books, but, as I've never read them (I only watched the cartoons), I disagree, lol!  I was disappointed though, that this one didnt use the infamous line, "Knowing is half the battle, GO JOE!!"

Rating: 4/5 stars - great action, special effects, plot

The Life of An Admissions Counselor...(Admission)

Today's movie:  "Admission"

Follow Tina Fey as an Admissions Counselor (Portia) for the prestigious Princeton University, in case you ever wanted to know what that life was like lol.  The previews set up the movie as a comedy in which Portia evaluates hundreds of high school seniors' college applications, and is the deciding factor as to whether they will be given the chance to pursue their lifelong dream (and perhaps continue the family legacy) of obtaining a degree from Princeton.  Interesting note:  Admissions Counselors (as well as any other position that makes decisions like employers, sororities, the coaches on "The Voice" tv show, etc) seem to view the applicant as just that, an applicant instead of a person, per se.  Anyway, part of Portia's job involves visiting high schools across the country giving presentations about a Princeton education, and Portia's world and life becomes a "little" different after visiting a tiny non-traditional high school.

After viewing, I think the movie is actually more of a drama (I think that's the word I want to use), w/ a little bit of comedy.  As the movie ended, I definitely put it in the "chick flick" category.  I did laugh, some parts were cute and thought-provoking, but yeah, definitely more of a "chick flick."  Tina Fey and Paul Rudd make a good team.  Was very surprised to see and learn that Gloria Reuben (ER), Lily Tomlin, and Michael Sheen (plays Mark, Portia's boyfriend) were in this movie.  (In case you were wondering, he played a vampire in Twilight Saga and a werewolf in Underworld movies and a reporter in Frost/Nixon).  I never knew his name though, lol.

I liked it :-)

Olympus Has Fallen

"Olympus Has Fallen" - stars Gerard Butler, Angela Bassett, and Morgan Freeman.  Gerard Butler plays a secret service agent who truly is good at his job; protecting the POTUS (President of the United States) and the first family.  His services are challenged when a foreign entity attempts to takeover the White House and create a hostage situation.  Will Gerard Butler protect the U.S. and the leader of the free world?  Does Morgan Freeman play the role he has played the most (President)?  Find out when you check this movie out.  Speaking of Morgan Freeman, he has not aged since he turned 60, and Angela Bassett performs her butt off, as usual.  If you enjoy movies w/ John McClane/Die Hard, Jason Statham (Parker, The Transporter, The Italian Job) and/or Mark Wahlberg, you'll enjoy this one.

Interesting tidbit: this was directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Brooklyn's Finest, Shooter).

911 is NOT a Joke! (The Call)

Today's movie:  The Call

I admit, I was only partially interested in seeing this movie for several reasons:

1.  Halle Berry's wig did absolutely NOTHING for her (I was quite disappointed)
2.  Halle's most recent movies didn't blow me away.
3.  The previews for this movie seemed to tell all the good parts and make you think the movie is rather predictable, including the ending.

Welp, I am SO glad that I ignored all of the above and decided to see this movie, Halle Berry is BACK!!!  As a 911 operator, Halle Berry (Jordan) is responsible for responding to the residents of Los Angeles frantic, sometimes crazy, always needy calls.  Unfortunately, Jordan answers a call that no operator would want.  The co-stars in this movie are just as great as Halle (Morris Chestnut & Abigail Breslin from M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs") and I actually learned a lot - some things to do in case of an emergency, and I will probably be even more on the lookout for things out of the ordinary now when I'm out and about.  Just be thankful for that nosy neighbor, if you've ever had one, lol.  Go see this one, make sure you try and go during a matinee, as the commentations from moviegoers around you may get a little carried away (although entertaining).  I too found myself talking to the screen.  I jumped at least 3 times, (I seriously caught myself w/ my mouth wide open), and I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to The Culture Club again w/o thinking of this movie.

Enjoy!!

Colin....SIGH (Dead Man Down)

So, I went to see "Dead Man Down."  I knew that it might not be super exciting, but, you can never go wrong w/ a revenge story line, plus, Colin Farrell is a pretty decent drama/action star.  It starts off really slow, but gets a little better as the plot develops and the reason behind the revenge is explained.  It took me getting home to figure out what was nagging me - this movie reminds me SO much of the movie "Columbiana" w/ Zoe Zaldana.  Unfortunately for Colin, Zoe blew him out of the water.  Not too sure how many more Farrell movies I'll be going to see, I am officially becoming bored w/ his movies.  Ah well!

From Dark to BRIGHT (Dark Skies, Oz)

This week's reviews:  Dark Skies & Oz the Great & Powerful

Dark Skies: a family lives a typical, seemingly normal life in a wonderful, suburban neighborhood.  Out of nowhere, weird stuff begins to happen in/to their homes and their lives. Full of lots of suspense, I jumped several times and was reminded a LOT of the movie, Poltergeist b/c of all the weird things that were happening.  For those of you that don't do scary, never fear, this is not a demon-inspired or some other kind of crazy nut case killing you in your dreams kind of movie. I was definitely surprised w/ the culprit as well as the ending, that's for sure.

Rating: 3/5 stars

Oz:  we all know the story of Dorothy, Glenda the Good, Elphaba (the green wicked witch), etc etc, but did you know that the great wizard Oz has a story too? Welcome to Oz, the Great and Powerful. I gotta admit, the whole time, I kept thinking about the movie The Wiz and how the characters compared (yeah, I know about the Wizard of Oz movie, but, this doesn't quite compare - except for the Tinkers, the Farmers, and the Munchkins :-) Anyway, this prequel gives an interesting scenario of how Theodora (AKA Evilene and Elphaba) actually came into existence, more information/background on Glenda the Good as well as Theodora's sister, and how the Wiz became so Great & Powerful, although, some of the information was "not so helpful." :-) 2 hours long and VERY colorful, safe for the kiddies, minus a few scenes that may be a little dark. If you enjoyed any of the Oz movies or even the play Wicked, you'd like this one too.

Rating: 3.5/5 - I just can't give it a perfect score even though costumes and special effects were great. If they bring it back w/ an African-American cast and some great dancing/musical scenes though, I'd probably give it a 5! :-)

Don't forget to "spring forward" Sunday morning, have a good weekend! :-)

Jack the Giant Slayer

So, I saw this movie Friday (opening day). This was basically a grown-up, super special effects version of the childhood story, "Jack and the Beanstalk," w/ a few twists, turns, and additions. Not too much to tell you except it was just under 2 hrs long, and the 1st 1/2 of the movie dragged on. I, (of course) walked away w/ questions, trying to remember the fairy tale and what parts the movie skipped, lol. While entertaining, don't know if I would break my neck to see this one.

Rating: 2.5/5 stars

The Rock in Action (The Snitch)

"The Snitch" - a parent's love for their child is something serious, as evidenced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in this movie. The Rock's son gets arrested on federal drug possession charges and The Rock fights to get him free. I was hesitant in seeing this movie, b/c it seemed like an after school special, w/o much of a plot. I'm glad I decided to see it though. While the movie didn't have a lot of action, it was entertaining watching the Rock go through hoops to work on getting his son free. The very best part though, was seeing the preview of R.E.D. (Retired, extremely dangerous), part 2 w/ Bruce Willis, john Malkovich and others. Its coming out later this year, and from what I saw, it is sure to be as good as the 1st!

Rating: 3.5/5

Another Sad Love Song (or story, rather) (Beautiful Creatures, Die Hard 5)

"Beautiful Creatures" - this is your basic movie is about a witch (caster) who will get full use of her powers when she turns 16. The twist of the movie, is a love interest w/ a mortal which could quite possibly determine the fate of each of them. This movie is about 2 hrs, 15 minutes, and had decent special effects. It reminded me a lot of the movie, "The Covenant," however, there was no love interest and was a lot more clear. I left the movie w/ tons of questions. I'm glad I didn't research if 1st, b/c I probably would've waited had I known it was part of a series of books, like the twilight or harry potter books. So, if you want to see a movie similar to the ones mentioned, go for it. Just keep in mind you may have questions, lol.

Review: 3/5 stars

"A Good Day to Die Hard" - John McLane is back as NYPD's favorite "save the world all by himself cop," lol! The action starts w/in 15 minutes (which is good, as the movie is only 97 minutes long). This time, john takes off to Russia to save his son, and ends up in several jaw-dropping, sometimes a tad bit unbelievable stunts.  Several scenes were very similar to the 1st Die Hard though, and I would definitely say this is one of my favorite in the series. While some movie series definitely don't need to go on, I can't say that I get tired of John McLane saving the world from would-be terrorists, lol. Out of the 5, I would rank them as: part 1, part 5, part 4, part 3, part 2. I know every1 loves part 3, but, I wasn't really a fan. Anyway, if you're in the mood for an action movie from beginning to end, this is it!

Rating: 4/5

Enjoy!

Comedy w/ a Side of Drugs (ID Thief, Side Effects)

Identity Thief - poor Sandy Bigelow (Jason Bateman) had his identity stolen from a true nut! While some of the antics were truly funny, the slapstick comedy was monotonous at times, and the movie seemed to drag on. If you are looking for comedy relief though, you will definitely get it in this movie!

Rating: 3/5 stars

Side Effects - we hear the commercials, infomercials, and the doctor's offices telling us the numerous side effects from w/e drug is being advertised or given. Jude Law plays a psychiatrist who tries to help a woman dealing w/ depression. Follow the twists and turns of her life as she experiences side effects from the drugs she's given. Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Magic Mike) plays the husband, Catherine Zeta-jones also stars. The movie starts off really slow, but once it gets going, its a wild ride!!

Rating: 3.5-4/5

Some Drama, Cartoon Fun, and Vampire Love (Zero Dark Thirty, Wreck-It Ralph, Warm Bodies)

Tonight's review: Zero Dark Thirty, Wreck-It Ralph, Warm Bodies

Zero - follows the series of events that took place leading up to the capture and subsequent killing of Osama Bin Laden.  Moves slowly, but builds to the climax. Was on the edge of my seat like I had no clue of what was going to happen. Approximately 2 hrs, 40 minutes.

Rating: 4/5 stars

Wreck-It - kids movie (cartoon, and yup, I actually saw it). Poor Ralph is the bad guy in a video game and is unhappy. Enter the world of what happens to/in video games and their characters when the arcade closes. Full of grown-up cliches, truly funny moments and not too much of a moral that is killed w/ sappiness, this one truly is not just for kids and I chuckled quite a few times!! :-)

Rating: 5/5 stars

Warm Bodies - and yet another post-apocalyptic zombie movie. While I am a fan of them and scary/horror movies, this one was just, "enh." Moves very slowly w/ just a few funny moments. Offers a different idea about zombies, and how to cure them. Supposed to be a love story; I did figure out the analogy and what the story was supposed to be similar to, even though I thought the analogy was extremely cheesy (email/text me if you want to know, don't want to ruin it for those that want to see).

Rating: 2/5 stars (I honestly don't know if I would rent on redbox). Ah well!

Sneak Preview & More (Safe Haven, Bullet to the Head, Movie 43)

Nicholas Sparks' novel "Safe Haven" is released in theaters February 14th. I saw the sneak preview Thursday. It is by far, the BEST Nicholas Sparks movie I've ever seen! Usually his movies are serious tearjerkers and chick flicks and extremely predictable! Not this one. Not predictable, not a tearjerker (had its moments, but you definitely won't need kleenex!). I even jumped a few times and it was quite surprising.

Verdict: 2 thumbs up (I may even see it again)

Sly Stallone is back at the action in "Bullet to the Head." As a hitman, he teams up w/ a cop to catch a killer. As common in his other roles, the action and the one-liners were great, Sly is definitely aging though - but nowhere near as fast as Arnold Schwarzenegger. If you're in the mood for some decent action - and no playing around to get to it, check it out.

Verdict: 3.5 out of 5

"Movie 43". I knew that the plot of the movie was purposefully not released by the studio, I also knew that it should be pretty decent due to all the stars (Dennis Quaid, Common, Hugh Jackman, Josh Duhamel, Terence Howard, Halle Berry, etc)that it should be pretty good. The best part about the movie was the actors lol. The movie did have its moments that were truly funny, but it is truly more raunchy than anything. It is essentially a bunch of short movies/stories wrapped up into one, and I thought T. Howard's was the best one. So, see it at your own risk, just don't say I didn't warn you lol.

Verdict: 1.5 out of 5

Action Day (Hansel & Gretel, Parker)

Today at the movies: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Parker

Both movies are action-packed, and pretty fast moving.

If you enjoy any type of werewolf, vampire, or movies where they hunt these creatures, you'll enjoy Hansel & Gretel. It is NOT the fairy tale we grew up w/ (apparently some parents thought so,as there were children in the theater). It is rated R, w/ good reason. But, the special effects were great, and although only 88 minutes, it was the perfect length.

Jason Statham was back to his usual tricks as an action star in Parker. As a "good crook" (if there is a such thing), he seeks revenge against his gang that double-crossed him. A bit slow at times, and I think there could've been a better co-star than J.Lo, Jason doesn't let you down if it is action you're after.

Overall, 3.5/5 stars for both.

Have fun! :-)

Weekend Re-Cap (Broken City, Mama, Last Stand)

Broken City - Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe are at it again in this dark drama. This movie starts off nice and innocent and slowly turns into a twisted tale when you don't know who or what to believe. Great movie, unlike most Wahlberg movies though, not a lot of action.

Verdict: 2 thumbs up

Mama - one word: SUSPENSE!!!! 2 sisters spend 5 years in the woods alone and when they go back to civilization, they bring someone or something with them. I actually jumped at least 4 times, it wasn't predictable, and the plot didn't get too intense or crazy when they tried to figure out what was going on (unlike some of the newer scary movies these days).

Verdict: 2 thumbs up

The Last Stand - good 'ole Arnold Schwarzenegger is back. This time, Arnold is an old (literally) sheriff that has to defend his small town.  Thankfully, there weren't any "taglines" from "The Terminator," and the car is AMAZING!!!! Pretty entertaining, don't know if I would go outside of matinee times. Had a fair share of humor too, thanks to supporting cast.

Verdict: 1.5 stars

The Return of the Gangster Movie! (Gangster Squad)

"Gangster Squad"

A Chicago gangster named Mickey Cohen, starts a 1 man mob operation in Los Angeles. Much to his dismay, the police chief doesn't care for his kind and puts together a vigilante squad to take Mickey down and take his operation apart.

Starring Anthony Mackie, Emma (forgot last name), Ryan Gosling, the older brother from Goonies, and the cop from 48 hours, if you enjoyed "The Untouchables" and any other type of gangster movie, you'll love it!!!

Two huge thumbs up!!

Holiday Reviews 2012 (D'Jango, Hobbit, Parental Guidance)

D'Jango Unchained - Quentin Tarantino created a western w/ a black star/hero during the times of slavery. Funny at times, true "Tarantino style" violence and gore, but great picture!! (2thumbs up)

The Hobbit - the 1st in a prequel trilogy to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. This one follows Bilbo Baggins in his 1st adventure w/ Gandalf the Grey and the dwarves. If you are a fan of LOTR, you will enjoy it, despite its length; 3 hours. (2 thumbs up)

Parental Guidance - Billy Crystal & Bette Midler are grandparents to Marisa Tomei's 3 children, and they get to watch them "parent-free" for a week. Funny, tear-jerker (only once though), and very family friendly. If you enjoyed "City Slickers," you'l like this one too! (2 thumbs up)

Upcoming movies: Superman: Man of Steel, Star Trek, Despicable Me 2 (it looks great already, lol)!!

Have fun!

Tom Cruise At His Best (Jack Reacher)

Today's movie: "Jack Reacher"

Tom Cruise plays a retired Army officer that likes to stay under the radar, that is, until someone needs him. Tom is back to what he's good at: saving. Action-packed and a lot of what made Tom famous in "Mission Impossible" series and other roles. I read some of the fan reviews before viewing the movie, and they didn't love Tom portraying Jack Reacher based on their idea of the character after reading the series. I liked it and him and thought he actually did a good job (course, I haven't read the books).

So anyway, if you're looking for a 2 hour action packed movie, this is it.

Enjoy!

Movie Saturday - Silver Linings Playbook

"Silver Linings Playbook" - a movie about a man (teacher in "hangover") w/ mental and anger issues, and how he tries to cope by thinking positive about life. Also stars Chris Tucker as one of his friends who also has some small mental issues. I'm sure you're thinking that it doesn't sound good and the whole movie will be weird, but it had a LOT of funny moments, Robert DeNiro also starred as his dad and of course he did a good job. My take away was, "just b/c you want it, doesn't mean you should have it."

Just my 2 cents, check it out :-)

2 thumbs up
